Obviously you need a camera. But which one?
There are many inexpensive point and click cameras through to professional models out there. What are you going to use it for?
If it is just for pictures that you are going to post on the web, or view on your computer, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars. If you are providing photographs for high-end magazines, you will need to spend a bit.
Personally, I have a Canon EOS 600D, a good, all-round digital SLR camera, that takes good enough quality photos for my needs. I sometimes revert back to my Sony Cybershot DSC-W230, a 12Mb point and click camera. It has good optics with a Zeiss lens, glass, not plastic like some much cheaper cameras.
